Motivational Interviewing for Patient Self-Management - JCHiP

A large part of your role is to assist patients in identifying and managing the health problems of greatest importance to them.  Motivational interviewing (MI) is used to identify patient preferences and help patients develop and maintain healthy behavior.  This course describes how to use Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help patients develop and maintain healthy behavior.  

 

Target Audience

Registered nurses and healthcare providers focusing on best practices in chronic disease management, case management, caregiver education and support, transitional care, and geriatric evaluation and management.

  • Describe the four fundamental techniques of MI.

Stephen T. Wegener, PhD, ABPP
 
Dr. Wegener is an Associate Professor and Director of Rehabilitation Psychology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He also holds an appointment as Associate Professor of Health Policy and Management, Bloomberg School of Public Health. His clinical activity is focused on providing psychological services to persons with chronic illness or traumatic injuries including chronic pain, amputations and spinal cord injury. 
 
As a rehabilitation psychologist, his research has focused on theories and projects that have the potential to improve function and reduce disability for persons with chronic illness and impairments.  An author of numerous articles in professional journals and book chapters, Dr. Wegener has presented at professional meetings across the US.
