Learning Objectives

  • Differentiate how occult HBV differs from classical HBV infections.

  • Describe the long term clinical consequences of occult HBV infection, including disease reactivation and cirrhosis.

  • Explain the pros and cons of screening of occult HBV in different population settings, highlighting the associated risk of hepatocellular carcinoma.
