Course 6 - Assisting Patients and Caregivers with Medicare Coverage

While your patients will have individual variations in insurance coverage, Medicare is the largest insurer of individuals over the age of 65.  This course provides a broad overview of Medicare benefits and directs you to resources useful to determining sevice-specific coverage. Patients and caregivers may ask you for help in understanding their Medicare coverage.  They may make decisions about their health care based on what they feel they can can afford. 

Target Audience

Registered nurses and healthcare providers focusing on best practices in chronic disease management, case management, caregiver education and support, transitional care, and geriatric evaluation and management.

Learning Objectives

  • Define the terms premium, deductible, co-payment, co-insurance, eligibility, supplemental insurance, custodial care, long term care, home care, and Medicare Advantage.
  • Identify the federal telephone number and web address for obtaining information to assist patients in using the Medicare program.

Dr. Chad Boult, MD, MPH, MBA is the Eugene and Mildred Lipitz Professor of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He directs the Roger C. Lipitz Center for Integrated Health Care and holds joint appointments on the faculties of the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine and Nursing.
 
Dr. Boult is a geriatrician with extensive experience in developing, testing, evaluating, and diffusing new models of health care for older persons. He is the principal investigator of a multi-site, cluster-randomized controlled trial of the Guided Care model of primary care for older people with multiple chronic conditions that is located in the Baltimore-Washington, DC, area which is funded by a public-private partnership including the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Institute on Aging, the John A. Hartford Foundation, and the Jacob and Valeria Langeloth Foundation. 
 
An author of numerous publications in professional journals, Dr. Boult is the recipient of the Excellence in Research Award from the American Geriatrics Society in 2000, the David H. Solomon Award from the UCLA Medical School and the Excellence in Program Innovation Award (for Guided Care) from the American Public Health Association in 2008.
